Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The NICU provides specialized intensive care for newborn infants with complications from premature birth, as well as types of respiratory, surgical, cardiac, neurological, genetic, renal, hematologic, and metabolic disorders.  The NICU is staffed by board certified neonatologists and a team of certified registered neonatal nurse practitioners, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists, and social workers.

If your baby was born at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, your baby will be transferred to the NICU as required.  If you were referred to the Medical Center later in your pregnancy because your obstetrician suspected a problem, the baby will be evaluated at birth and, if necessary, will be admitted to the NICU at Penn State Children’s Hospital.  If your baby is born at another hospital, your physician in consultation with one of our neonatologists arranges transfer to our facility. Depending on the circumstances and the baby’s condition, transportation will be made available by personnel from the referring hospital or a Medical Center transport team. Such transfers are made by ambulance or Life Lion helicopter.

Our pediatric ambulance and Life Lion helicopter are mobile intensive care units equipped with special incubators, ventilators, oxygen, monitors, and other equipment necessary for your baby’s care in transit. We always try to make sure you have the opportunity to see your child and to talk with the team before their departure.
