Community Service Nurses at Penn State Hershey Medical Center were involved in a broad scope of wide-reaching community activities this year, volunteering their own time and services to individuals and organizations from next door to half-way across the globe. Many nurses participated in ministries, care of the elderly and infirmed, and in support roles for family crisis through churches or other religious affiliations. Others acted as substitute school nurses and taught health and career workshops in support of local school districts and children in their community. Penn State nurses were found at community health screenings, in mentoring programs at YMCA/YWCA, and leading myriad support groups on and off campus. International efforts included aiding victims of the horrific tsunami that engulfed Sri Lanka and surrounding areas in December, medical mission work to various countries, and assisting the Red Cross here at home. Nurses organized camps for disadvantaged and disabled kids, participated in fundraising activities, and taught safety in workshops around the community. Time and services were volunteered to the Children’s Miracle Network, Relay for Life, American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Visiting Nurses, and American Heart Association, to name a few. Penn State nurses show commitment to the community and a willingness to share their knowledge and expertise with others. |
