Penn State Hershey Medical Center Receives International Recogntion For Nursing Excellence | Organization Attains Elite Magnet Recognition | Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was notified in August, 2007, that it has been awarded Magnet Recognition - the nursing profession’s highest honor for health care organizations by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Medical Center joins an elite group of 256 Magnet™ organizations worldwide. Less than 4.5 percent of U.S. health care organizations have earned this recognition.
The Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care they can expect to receive. The announcement from ANCC affirms that Penn State Hershey Medical Center has demonstrated quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice.
“We have spent much of the past three years implementing a unique model of shared governance that has empowered our nurses to improve their professional practice for the benefit of our patients and for their own quality of work life,” stated Donna Reck, MSN, RN, NE-BC, chief nursing officer of the Medical Center. “I am so very proud of who we are and what we have become through our Magnet journey.” The Magnet Recognition Program is based on quality indicators and standards of nursing practice as defined by the American Nurses Association (ANCC’s parent organization). The Medical Center submitted 2,200 pages of evidence in March and hosted a four-day site appraisal in June to demonstrate its commitment to maintaining these high standards of nursing excellence.
Penn State Hershey Medical Center’s status as a Magnet hospital is valid for four years. It will need to reapply and be recertified to maintain the status. |
